Bearing Witness: Documenting October 7 and Its Aftermath

The National Library of Israel (NLI) is embarking on an initiative to document the impact on local diaspora communities of October 7 and its aftermath.

Bearing Witness: Documenting October 7 and Its Aftermath – The Experience of Jewish Communities Worldwide

AJHS is partnering with NLI to gather documentation from Australia.

Our first step will be to review all the material which is posted weekly in the Australian media.

We have nominated four keywords “Jewish”, Israel”, Antisemitism” and “October 7” as being our focus.

In the week of 9 Sept, 998 articles including Letters to the Editor had one or more of our keywords.

After discounting articles which weren’t relevant e.g. a reference to Israel playing in the UEFA Cup and those articles which were from international news services or reprints from overseas publications, we arrived at 247 articles. These had been published in national dailies or small circulation papers such as the Townsville Bulletin and Farm Online.

Often the same article appeared with varying headings in different publications.

The Australian program is being launched by Oren Weinberg CEO of NLI at an event at the Sydney Jewish Museum at 6;00pm on Monday 30 September. For further information and online booking visit https://sydneyjewishmuseum.com.au/an-evening-with-oren-weinberg/
